Nicolas, born on August 9, 1997, spent his early years in the western suburbs of Paris. Growing up amidst the challenges and hardships of street life, he quickly grasped the realities of a tough existence. However, it was during this period that he stumbled upon a life-altering discovery—an opportunity to capture moments through the lens of a camera.

Nicolas stumbled upon a camera previously owned by several family members, and without any particular knowledge, talent, or motivation, he began taking photos. It served as a temporary distraction from the tedium of his everyday life. As time passed, he realized that his camera offered an escape from the perpetual boredom that enveloped him, providing a fleeting sense of purpose.

In 2020, Nicolas found himself grappling with a profound lack of ambition in his “art“. Despite his limited creative skills and wavering motivation, he decided to take a feeble step forward by launching his website, www.nicolas.cool, to showcase his photography. The aim was not to demonstrate exceptional talent or inspire others, but rather to fill the void of his uneventful free time.

During an interview, when asked to define his style, Nicolas humbly described it as "good ideas, poor execution." This candid admission hinted at his self-awareness regarding his lack of skill and the imperfections inherent in his work. Rather than pursuing mastery or growth, Nicolas resigned himself to the mediocrity that characterized his photography.

Despite his limited talent and wavering motivation, Nicolas continues to capture moments through his lens. He lacks the drive to push himself creatively, and his photos remain ordinary and uninspiring. Yet, in their simplicity, they offer a glimpse into a life marked by missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential. His work serves as a reminder that even amidst mediocrity, there can be a semblance of meaning, however fleeting it may be.

I could chase the perfect camera forever. But that would probably not make me happier and the impact on my work wouldn’t be that big. I have learned to work with the equipment available for years and feel most comfortable with these cameras in hand. All my cameras have great sentimental value to me. They may not be the most sophisticated and advanced equipment, but they have been passed to me by family members or gifted to me by friends.

I am mostly shooting with my trustworthy Canon FTb or Minolta X700. Both cameras are strongly built and versatile for the content I photograph. Both of them are coupled with great lenses from the same brands.

Besides the 2 SLR cameras mentioned above, I am often carrying the unbreakable Olympus AF-1 with me. It’s a great point-and-shoot, very light and with good glass on it. I currently use it for my 365 days of photography projects.

Finally, the Chinon 35f-ee is my go-to camera when travelling, the size and weight of the rangefinder make it the perfect equipment for lighter journeys.
